Revolutionary War Patriots
The American Revolutionary War began in July of 1776 when colonists began their struggle to become free from the control of Great Britain. Finally, after eight years, a free nation was born and became the United States of America. Of the many Patriot soldiers moving west after the war, more than 40 found their way to Wisconsin Territory and helped to build our state. At the close of their lives they were buried in Wisconsin cemeteries.
The Sons of the American Revolution was founded in 1876 during the centennial celebration of the start of the American Revolutionary War (Origins of the SAR). During the bicentennial celebration of the War in 1975, Wisconsin Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (WISSAR) member Robert G. Carroon searched for background information on these Patriots and was author of an article published in the Milwaukee County Historical Society's Historical Messenger.
Years later, WISSAR member Harold Klubertanz (past President) was named chairman of the Grave Marking Committee with a goal of raising funds to purchase and install historical markers in the cemeteries where these Patriots were buried. Through Harold's persistence, and with assistance of WISSAR members and friends, publication of the book Soldiers of the American Revolution Buried in Wisconsin was made possible. Dedicated to the honor of these Patriots, the book contains a biography of each soldier, including information about this project and photos of historical marker dedication ceremonies. Most of the book is based on Carroon's article in the 1975 Historical Messenger, with permission from the Milwaukee County Historical Society.
This project has been made possible by donations from many WISSAR members, veterans organizations, historical societies, and genealogical societies. Matching grants from the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution George Washington Endowment Fund were significant factors in covering the cost and installation of several bronze markers.
