GeorgeReams (1758-1842) was born on April 4, 1758, in Cumro Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. CLICK for LARGE IMAGE He enlisted in March 1781 in Captain George Grant's Company of Colonel Steele's Pennsylvania Militia. Reams may also have served in General John Sullivan's expedition against the Indians in Pennsylvania and New York.

At some time he moved to Wisconsin, where he died and was buried in the Whig Methodist Cemetery, Section 1, Town of Harrison, Grant County, Wisconsin. The Whig cemetery is west of Platteville. One travels about three and one-half miles from the Platteville city limits to Whig Road. Turn left and drive to Baker Ford Road, turn right. The Whig Cemetery is down that road a mile or two on the left. George's grave is near the west side road.

The headstone is a government marker simply stating "Geo. Reams, Rev War." No other information is given. Although the grave is that of a Revolutionary soldier named George Reams, there is some question as to which George Reams is meant. There were two others by the same name, one from Upper Paxtay Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and one from Cocalico Township, Lancaster County.

The service record given above seemed most representative. A member of the Whig Cemetery Board, a Mr. Culver, has no doubt that this George Reams is a Revolutionary War veteran. He points to the Government headstone as evidence.
